The channel into Carteret dries 5 metres, but with tidal ranges in these parts of up to 11 metres that should not put you off. At the end of the channel is a marina with a sill which preserves about 2.3m of water, and at HW±2 1/2 when the gate is open entry is straightforward. More precise predicted times for the gate are given on the local town website.

From offshore the Cap de Carteret is identified by its grey lighthouse and the steel radio mast next to it. Coming from the north, keep about half a mile off the point and having rounded it, with at least half tide under the keel, head for the end of the breakwater which is marked by a white beacon with a red top. From the south just head in to the entrance, which faces due east towards the land. From there proceed up the channel round to the right and enter the marina (Port des Isles) between the red and green marks.

In season you will probably be met by a man in a dinghy who will direct you to a berth. Otherwise tie up and report. The haven is well sheltered behind the sands of Barneville and offers decent modern facilities at the local yacht club. Fuel is available, but only for limited periods each day, so short stay visitors should not rely on it and may need to resort to portage from the town garage ten minutes away.

Carteret is an attractive small town backed by the wooded cape which has the further merit for sailors working the tidal streams of acting as a convenient staging point from Cherbourg on the way to St Malo and points west. Restaurants range from the superior dining room of the conspicuous white Hotel de la Marine to various lesser but satisfactory establishments further along the quay. Boulangerie and other shops near the hotel.
