Fowey is easily identified by the large red and white striped day-mark on Gribbin Head 1 ½ miles SW of the entrance. Half a mile off the Head lies Cannis Rock marked by a south cardinal which should be left to landward. If arriving from the east, beware of Udder Rock about 3 miles east of the entrance which is also marked by a south cardinal that must be left to landward.
Aside from these, there are no serious hazards and plenty of deep water. On arrival keep a sensible distance away from the cliffs and watch out for coasters or cruise ships using the harbour, making sure you keep out of their way. Then call Fowey Harbour Patrol on VHF Ch 12 who will probably direct you to a visitors pontoon on the east side of the estuary close to the inlet of Pont Pill. If there is any kind of sea running this is not a particularly restful berth, and if you want a quiet night or do not need to visit the town then there are sometimes more sheltered alternatives further up at Mixtow.
In good weather the harbour is a most attractive stop with simple access. To go ashore either get the dinghy out or call the water taxi (May-September) on VHF Ch 6 or T 07774 906730. Most of the shops and restaurants are in Fowey rather than Polruan. Showers at the Royal Fowey Yacht Club 100m south of the town quay or Fowey Gallants Sailing Club 100m north of Albert Quay. Diesel from Tom's Boatyard in Polruan (M-F working hours); petrol by portage.
