Le Tréport isn’t the prettiest place on the Côte Opale, but that only means that prices here are a touch lower and the welcome warmer than in some more favoured destinations. Connoisseurs of small industrial towns in France will find a short diversion worthwhile.
There are no hazards in the offing, but the approach channel dries 2m so this is strictly a top half of the tide destination. Once inside the entrance, the channel forks. The rather attractive small marina is in the Bassin de Pêche to the right to which the lock gates open HW±3. Before entering you must call the lock on VHF Ch 12 or T 02 35 50 63 06 and observe traffic lights.
In season, however, you may find that this is full, in which case you may be directed to the less appealing commercial Bassin à Flot to the left. This is not only somewhat bleak but is a long dusty walk from the centre of town which is around the Quai François 1er to the south and west of the Avant Port. In short, it pays to arrive early and if possible inquire in advance as to the prospect of accommodation (Capitainerie T 02 35 86 17 91; Harbourmaster VHF Ch 12, 72, T 02 35 86 17 91). Without access to one or other of the two locked basins you will either have to dry out in the Avant Port or retire hurt to Dieppe three hours away.
Among the better restaurants is the brasserie-style St-Louis (43 quai François 1er, T 02 35 86 20 70). The adjoining settlement of Mers-les-Bains to the north of the town has a good sandy beach.
