ENTERING the Oosterschelde from the sea, the alternative to Colijnsplaat is Zierikzee which is only a mile or two further from the Roompot Sluis, on the north side of the water. It’s a historic old town well worth visiting, with attractive inner harbours guarded by medieval gatehouses and a huge church tower which makes a useful conspicuous landmark.

Entry is from the south-east along the Havenkanaal, and visiting boats lie strung out on pontoons along its length. Head in towards town for the harbour master’s office and limited showers and toilets. The centre is a bit of a walk, but the exercise will give you an appetite, and there are several restaurants of which one of the best is De Gouwe Geit (Lammermarkt 18, T 01 11 41 70 61). There are also shops for your breakfast croissants.

If you haven’t been to Holland recently, don’t think that Dutch food it all rubbery cheese and boiled cabbage. The portions may be generous, but restaurants in the Netherlands have improved by at least as much as in the UK and the food is usually tasty and good value.

Colijnsplaat and Zierikzee offer a contrast which recurs throughout the area: efficient but slightly bland marinas with plenty of space, or historic towns with limited space or facilities for yachts but oodles of character. A blend of the two makes for a satisfying cruise.
